NORTH JERSEY HOMES
The WNBC-TV real estate/home renovation series "OpenHouse NYC" has
partnered with North Jersey home furnishings and design company
Greenbaum Interiors for a special "To the Rescue" segment.
Series host George Oliphant will team up with Greenbaum Senior Designer
David Zisa to create a new master bedroom for Piscataway homeowner Alex
Adkins, who lost his wife to breast cancer.
Adkins, a single father with three growing boys, reached out to the show
for help in creating a new space to call his own. The shoot took place
earlier this month and the transformation, from start to finish, will be
seen on WNBC at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 22.
"The homeowner is a warm and caring father, and I wanted to design a
room that was spacious and comfortable," David Zisa said. "After a long
day of work and taking care of his three young sons, I'd think he needs
a peaceful space to retreat to."
"This project has been all about passion and compassion," added
Oliphant. "We want to make a space fit for a king. This dad definitely
deserves it."
Zisa's design plan featured the construction of a doorway that turns the
bedroom area into a three-room master suite. Outdated floral wallpaper
was replaced with faux suede in the bedroom, grass cloth in the sitting
room and new wallpaper in the bathroom. To unify the space, Zisa did
away with the carpet and refinished the hardwood floors underneath.
He dismantled the closet and designed a cabinet to hold Adkins'
flat-screen TV and clothing, eliminating the need for dressers and
creating more floor space. He also designed a custom-upholstered
headboard and bed and window treatments — made, like the cabinet, in
Greenbaum Interiors' workrooms. The only furniture added to the bedroom
was two nightstands, crystal lamps and an upholstered bench, all from
Greenbaum's inventory. Long-term Greenbaum suppliers provided materials
to update the bathroom.
